May\u2019s retail <\/b>sales <\/b>figures have jumped <\/b>sharply<\/b>. Total sales shot up 17.7% in May, bringing volumes to 7.8%\u00a0 of February’s level, before the crisis.<\/p>\n

The rebound confirms the <\/b>rise <\/b>in online sales<\/b>, which grew by 32.2% over two months. E-commerce now\u00a0 accounts for 24% of retail sales, excluding cars and petrol.<\/p>\n

Our analysis<\/b><\/h2>\n

An increasing share of retail sales is being carried out online. Prior to the last two months, e-commerce\u00a0 accounted for 15% of retail sales, so lockdown appears to have accelerated the shift towards online shopping.\u00a0 The question is whether the current level will become a new normal or whether there will be a return to the\u00a0 previous long-term trend.<\/p>\n

From a macroeconomic perspective, whether a purchase is made online or in-store matters little. However, if\u00a0 the shift triggers retailer <\/b>bankruptcies<\/b>, the result will likely be a secondary <\/b>economic<\/b> impact<\/b>.<\/p>\n
