Two key shifts explain the slowdown:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Consumer spending<\/b> was slightly slower after two particularly strong quarters;<\/li>\n<li><b>The trade balance pulled growth down<\/b>, hit by both a fall in exports and a sharp rise in imports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, residential and non-residential investment is improving after several quarters of weakness<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5453 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1103\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3.png 1103w, https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3-1024x575.png 1024w, https:\/\/latribune.lazardfreresgestion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grap-en-3-600x337.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1103px) 100vw, 1103px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>OUR ANALYSIS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The poor foreign trade figures are likely to be a one-off. <\/b>Lower exports are mainly correcting an exceptionally strong third quarter driven by a big jump in soybean exports. The higher import numbers reflect renewed inventory accumulation: It is not uncommon for imports to surge when businesses restock.<\/p>\n<p><b>Looking at the rest of the data, domestic demand is growing at its highest level since the third quarter of 2015 and is set to remain buoyant. <\/b>Consumer spending should be underpinned by both new job creations and the faster pace of wage rises.
